Experienced criminal defence lawyers across Auckland and Northland.
We specialise in criminal defence work. We’re a small firm and our focus is you.
We believe in giving you the attention, care and expert advice that you need. Being a smaller firm does not mean we compromise our services or the expertise of our lawyers.
We recognise that each client’s needs are different and individual to them. We don’t believe that one solution fits all, and we strive to ensure the best possible outcome for you whatever your legal situation.
We have offices in Auckland and Whangārei and represent clients in the District and High Court, as well as the Court of Appeal. Our lawyers also specialise in Parole hearings and can represent you before the Parole Board.
We’re approved for Legal Aid to the highest level category, and we take urgent PDLA (Police Detention Legal Assistance) calls in Auckland and Northland, so we can help from the point of arrest — not just if you’re appearing in Court. Help is there the moment police get in touch.
We also operate a Trust Account for your matter. At Thode Utting & Co., we operate a Trust Account in accordance with the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 and the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Trust Account) Regulations. If you do not qualify for Legal Aid, you can instruct us on a private basis and deposit funds into our Trust Account. Your money will be held securely and separately, and used only for your legal fees and/or expenses. We provide clear information about costs from the outset, and our team is happy to discuss flexible payment options to help you access quality legal representation.

We understand that every case is different. We take the time to understand your circumstances, explain your options, and work alongside you to achieve the best outcome possible.
Preparing for a Parole Board hearing can be overwhelming. Our team regularly represents clients before the New Zealand Parole Board and can help you understand the process, prepare effectively, and present your case clearly.
We can also assist with applications to vary or remove Parole conditions where circumstances have changed.
If you believe a decision made in your case was incorrect, you may have the right to appeal. We can advise you on the options available and represent you throughout the appeals process.
Our team regularly appears in the High Court and Court of Appeal in relation to bail decisions, pre-trial rulings, convictions, and sentencing matters.
Losing your licence through a disqualification or suspension can affect your work, your family and your day-to-day life. In many cases you may be able to apply for a limited licence that lets you keep driving for essential purposes.
We can advise you on whether you’re eligible, and prepare and present the application for you.
